But scholars do not agree that He also gave them to us to claim for this day in which we live. They believe that the keys were not given to us for use in this day—except to settle disagreements in the Church. This view is held today by probably 80 to 90% of all evangelicals. They teach that miracles were only performed by the disciples and ended at their demise. The questions is, was Jesus talking only to His disciples or, dear reader, was He talking to His Church? Did He give the keys to the kingdom of heaven to only a few in that day, or did He surrender them completely to His Church so that now He works on earth only through His born-again Church?

Do we work only as He appoints, or does He go with us to confirm His Word? Let us assume that Jesus was being straightforward with us—that He did give us the keys and will bind what the Church binds, will loose what the Church looses. Immediately a chorus of voices will arise and say, "The Bible clearly defines the use of the keys. " Let us go to Matthew 18:15 and examine the context to see if the Calvinists are correct in saying we do have some use of the keys, but they are only to be used when there is a family disagreement.
